Volunteer's story — Suzan
I reached a stage in my life where I wanted to give something back, I heard of Newport Women’s Aid and was told that they took on volunteers, as I’d experienced domestic abuse in the past I thought that maybe I had something to offer them. I applied and got accepted as a volunteer last year. As a volunteer I work three to four days a week and participate in a variety of things, from admin to tea making. I help facilitate the freedom programme which is a fantastic programme that many women find very helpful; I also do the weekly occupancy sheets, have learnt how to conduct assessments and participate in the on-call emergency help line.
I have learnt a lot since I have been here and continue learning each day. I have also made some wonderful friends. I would eventually like a career in support work and would always be grateful to Women’s Aid for giving me the chance to learn and grow. I think Women’s Aid is a very valuable organisation, without which many women and children would suffer. It’s a very friendly, non-judgemental environment, with wonderful staff that are always happy to help anyone who walks through the door.
